There's a Snake in My Shorts and Other Wildlife Encounters in Costa Rica

We had another beautiful week of tropical weather: low 80s during the day, low 70s at night, and the sounds of heavy rains while we drift off to sleep dreaming of monkeys and sloths. There are no shortages of wildlife adventures in Costa Rica. In the span of just one day, Jim picked up his shorts off the floor to find a snake napping in them, then later watched a scorpion strut across the terrace while he stretched before bed. That was right after he saw the biggest possum he’s ever seen trying to cross the terrace.

We specifically picked this area of Costa Rica for its remoteness and its untouched natural wonders, including the wildlife. So far, our two favorite things to do are sit on our terrace watching a constant parade of animals and hike up the hill on the 4x4 road to spot monkeys. Our tours have been good too, but it’s hard to beat the wildlife right on our front porch.

We made a day trip to Corcovado National Park, but it was a bust. Although we did see spider monkeys, a fer de lance, and a sloth, so it wasn’t a complete bust! We have a few more local tours planned and I’m hoping to capture some great pictures of frogs and insects… fingers crossed!

In the meantime, enjoy some pictures and videos of the amazing wildlife and a few spectacular beaches—there’s no shortage of those either!
